Linkage: Pick a Fight

Linkage01The last church I pastored supported a variety of different missions.  On the one hand this was a good thing because the people recognized the need that each of these organization had.  The problem was that each mission received about $10 a month.  While every little bit helps, it is not the most effective way to give money.  I tried to talk the board into only support 2 or 3 missions and giving them a larger gift each month, and becoming more involved in what the mission is doing.

There is no doubt that we are faced with a number of worthy causes.  These cause cover both increasing people quality of life and bringing people into God’s Kingdom.  We get spread so thin with trying to support as many as we can that we rarely get personally involved with a cause.

If we are going to discover meaning and purpose in our lives this one of the things we need to do.  We need to become personally involved in a cause that is part of God’s grand restoration project of Creation.  Bob Goff wrote about this reality in a guest post at Donald Miller’s blog Storyline.

My list of things that I decided to do this year starts with these three words: “Pick a fight.”

That might sound a little odd at first. I picked a fight with Dale Gardener when I was in the 7th grade. He was huge. He almost blocked the sun when he walked by. I didn’t like Dale because he was a bully and beat up the little guys on campus. I’m not sure why he didn’t like me, maybe because I wasn’t a little guy.

It was pretty easy to pick a fight with Dale, actually. I told Dale one day when he was beating up another kid that I was “calling him out”. That’s junior high speak for let’s have a fist fight; so we did. We really didn’t settle anything in the cul-de-sac a few days later other than trade bloody noses and let off some steam. We both got expelled for a couple days (which just made for a long weekend), and by Monday we were back at school exchanging gunslinger stares as we passed each in the hallways.
